Free-ranging livestock and a diverse landscape structure increase bat foraging in mountainous landscapes

چکیده
Abstract Traditional farming, where livestock is seasonally managed as free ranging and the use of drugs reduced or absent, may prove beneficial to biodiversity by fostering occurrence spatial heterogeneity, increasing availability trophic resources wildlife. Previous work indicates that presence cattle in lowlands leads an increase bat foraging activity, yet no study has addressed this topic mountainous regions, free-ranging still common. Here we explore relationships between landscape structure, farming activity a agricultural area, hypothesizing will response structure heterogeneity. We found traditional have role influencing agroecosystems, its effects are evident for limited number species. Three pipistrelle species favoured areas subjected hunting more often over fresh dung than at control sites. Free-ranging thus provide profitable opportunities bats landscapes, which remarks importance activities sustaining biodiversity. Cattle might also benefit from if suppression blood-sucking pests.

Influence of Landscape Structure and Human Modifications on Insect Biomass and Bat Foraging Activity in an Urban Landscape
Urban landscapes are often located in biologically diverse, productive regions. As such, urbanization may have dramatic consequences for this diversity, largely due to changes in the structure and function of urban communities. We examined the influence of landscape productivity (indexed by geology), housing density and vegetation clearing on the spatial distribution of nocturnal insect biomass...
متن کاملEvaluation of Ecological Vulnerability in Chelgard Mountainous Landscape
Although complexity and vulnerability assessment of mountain landscapes is increasingly taken into consideration, less attention is paid to ecophronesis-based solutions so as to reduce the fragile ecosystem vulnerability. The main propose of this study is to provide an insight of mountain complex landscape vulnerability and propose ecophronesis-based solutions in strategic planning framework fo...
متن کاملBat guilds, a concept to classify the highly diverse foraging and echolocation behaviors of microchiropteran bats
Throughout evolution the foraging and echolocation behaviors as well as the motor systems of bats have been adapted to the tasks they have to perform while searching and acquiring food. When bats exploit the same class of environmental resources in a similar way, they perform comparable tasks and thus share similar adaptations independent of their phylogeny. Species with similar adaptations are...
متن کاملEffects of predictability and competition on group and individual choice in a free-ranging foraging environment.
The present study examined the social foraging of rats in an open arena. The relative quantity of food varied across two food sources, or "patches." Five food quantity ratios (1:1, 1:2, 1:8, 8:1, 2:1) were presented in a series of 30-min sessions. Ratios varied randomly across 6-min components within sessions (Phase 1), or in a consistent order across sessions (Phase 2). Group and individual pr...
